imageThe general consensus of public opinion is that exercise is good for us. Recent research shows that exercise has many benefits, from decreasing cardiovascular disease risk, improving body composition, to improving mood and decreasing risk of Alzheimer’s disease. However –implementing an exercise routine is not easy. We may join a gym with good intentions that eventually fizzle out, or embark on some intense jogging program that may result in injuries. There is still a perception that we need to sweat and have a “no pain-no gain” attitude to exercise. These beliefs and attitudes are not well founded in current research. Low intensity exercise such as cycling, walking, hiking, Pilates, Gyrotonic®, yoga and Tai Chi have less risk of injury and have the benefits of selectively depleting and redistributing body fat as well as maintaining and improving cardiovascular function. High intensity strength training such as weight lifting or using various machines to provide resistance increase muscle size and shape and improve body contour Pulsed high intensity-recovery training is the best activity to restore heart rate variability as well as nervous system health.
